Midmar Dam and Nature Reserve, Umgeni Valley Nature Reserve and Karkloof Falls all provide wonderful days out in the open, with boating, skiing, fishing, game viewing, and picturesque spots for braais and picnics.  The Midlands Meander is the heart of the arts and crafts community of the Midlands and along its trail you will come across artists, potters, restaurants, studios and galleries to mention just a few.

Explore the Karkloof  indigenous forest from a different angle with Karkloof Canopy Tours whose fabulous canopy tours provide a look at the forest from above.  There are several Golf courses in the area, including Sakabula Golf Club, Howick Golf Course, Victoria Country Club and Boschoek Golf Club .  Hiking trails and horse riding can be arranged and of course what better way to see the scenic views than on bike?
